Gov Data MCP

MCP Server + TypeScript SDK for 114 Government Data APIs

![License: MIT](https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT)

562 tools covering federal, state, and international government data — economic, fiscal, health, education, energy, environment, legislative, financial, transportation, transit, traffic, safety, procurement, science, trade, case law, campaign finance, and more. All 50 states + DC represented.

40+ APIs require no key · The rest use free keys that take under a minute to get · Complete Tool Reference

Features

  • 562 tools across 114 government data modules — federal agencies, state portals, transit systems, energy grids, and international sources
  • All 50 states + DC — generic Socrata + ArcGIS tools across 47 states, 15-state real-time 511 traffic, 12 transit systems, and state-specific APIs
  • Cross-referencing — built-in routing table guides the LLM to combine data from multiple agencies automatically
  • Code mode — WASM-sandboxed JavaScript execution reduces context window usage by 98–100% for large responses
  • Selective loading — load only what you need: --modules fred,treasury,state-data,mbta
  • Dual transport — stdio for desktop clients, HTTP Stream for web/remote
  • TypeScript SDK — every API is importable as a standalone typed client, no MCP required
  • Disk-backed caching — responses cached to disk, survives restarts
  • Rate limiting + retry — token-bucket rate limiter with exponential backoff on 429/503

Quick Start

MCP Server

npx gov-data-mcp

Add to Claude Desktop (claude_desktop_config.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gov-data": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "gov-data-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "FRED_API_KEY": "your_key",
        "DATA_GOV_API_KEY": "your_key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Add to VS Code / Copilot (.vscode/mcp.json):

{
  "servers": {
    "gov-data": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "gov-data-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "FRED_API_KEY": "your_key",
        "DATA_GOV_API_KEY": "your_key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Load Only Specific Modules

# Federal economic data only
npx gov-data-mcp --modules fred,treasury,bls,bea,eia

# State data only

# Everything (default)
npx gov-data-mcp

HTTP Stream (for remote/web clients)

npx gov-data-mcp --transport httpStream --port 8080

Example Prompts

Health: "Show me the adverse event profile for Ozempic including clinical trials, FDA reports, and pharma payments to doctors."

Legislative: "What happened with the Inflation Reduction Act? Who sponsored it, how did the vote break down by party?"

State data: "Compare Maryland and Virginia crime rates over the last 10 years."

Transit: "What are the current MBTA delays in Boston? Any service alerts?"

Traffic: "Show me current traffic incidents on Ohio highways."

Energy: "What's the current fuel mix on the Texas ERCOT grid? How much is wind vs natural gas?"

Environment: "What are the current reservoir levels in California? Any drought concerns?"

Cross-reference: "How has federal spending on healthcare changed over the last 5 years, and what health outcomes has it produced?"

TypeScript SDK

npm install gov-data-mcp
import { getObservations } from "gov-data-mcp/sdk/fred";
import { searchBills } from "gov-data-mcp/sdk/congress";
import { queryStateDataset } from "gov-data-mcp/sdk/state-data";

const gdp = await getObservations("GDP", { sort: "desc", limit: 5 });
const mdCrime = await queryStateDataset("MD", "jwfa-fdxs", { where: "year = '2023'" });

No MCP server required. All functions include caching, retry, and rate limiting.

Disclaimer

This project integrates a significant number of government APIs, many of which have large, complex, or inconsistently documented schemas. AI is used as a tool throughout this project to help parse API documentation, generate type definitions, and scaffold tool implementations — making it possible to cover this much surface area and get people access to government data faster than would otherwise be feasible. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, some endpoints may return unexpected results, have incomplete parameter coverage, or behave differently than documented.

This is a community-driven effort — if you find something that's broken or could be improved, please open an issue or submit a PR. The goal is to make government data as accessible and reliable as possible, together.

All data is sourced from official U.S. government, state, and international APIs — the server does not generate, modify, or editorialize any data.
